Gasperini: ‘I always felt trust’

Atalanta Coach Gian Piero Gasperini insists he never felt that his job was under threat.

The experienced tactician had come under pressure from some quarters following an inconsistent start to the season, but he led La Dea to an impressive win over Napoli on Sunday.

“Against a strong team like Napoli I decided to have faith in all the young players in order to see what they are made of,” Gasperini said when quizzed about a bold team selection. “I must say it was a marvellous performance.

“I have always felt the trust of President Percassi, the transfer window had slowed down our process of development.”

The 58-year-old then suggested expectations of his side may have been too high at the start of the campaign.

“Coming in here maybe people thought about targets that were too ambitious. I don’t think we were ready to have a different season to the one we are having.

“Later, looking forward maybe we will be able to grow.”
