Galliani calls for technology

Milan’s joint-CEO Adriano Galliani has called for goal-line technology to be introduced in Serie A, and discusses the Sassuolo defeat.

The issue was re-opened yesterday after Davide Astori’s goal for Roma was ruled to have crossed the line, with Udinese insisting that it should have been disallowed.

“It’s too easy to talk about it now,” Galliani said at a Press conference to present Alessio Cerci to fans and media.

“I don’t understand why there are people who don’t want it.

“I often look at the example of tennis, which has used HawkEye since 2006. It’s amazing that you can look at HawkEye and it will tell you whether the ball has caught the line or not, and now all sports can have that technology.

“Of course the referee should have his own discretion, but when it comes to the goal we need a tool to tell us whether the ball has crossed the line or not.

“They have it in England, Germany will have it next year. I think we’ll have this technology from next year.”

The Rossoneri were defeated yesterday by Sassuolo at San Siro, but Galliani insists he’s not unduly worried.

“We were on a high, and even before [a friendly win over] Real Madrid we had drawn at Roma and beaten Napoli.

“We were playing good football, and we did that in the first half hour yesterday. Milan had a good start, and we controlled the game until their goal.

“Then that changed the game and Sassuolo did well. We conceded a second goal on the only corner we conceded, it was an unexpected defeat.

“It’s a shame, because we had the chance to make a leap up the table. Had we won we’d have been two points behind third place, and that’s our goal.

“We’ve gotten good results against big teams, and it’s too bad we’ve dropped points against teams weaker than us.

“We have to think about getting back on track immediately, we have a game on Saturday and then Sassuolo in the Coppa Italia which is an important competition for us.

“It seems to me that this morning [in training] there were already signs of a reaction.”
