Free agent Papu Gomez unlikely to return to Serie A

Former Atalanta captain Papu Gomez is currently a free agent, making some fans dream of a return to Serie A, but current indications suggest that this is unlikely.

The Argentinian forward spent seven years of his career with la Dea from 2014 to 2021, becoming a fan favourite and wearing the captain’s armband in Bergamo.

Gomez was sold to Sevilla in January 2021 for around €6.4m but he struggled to show his best in Spain and left on a free transfer at the start of July. He is still without a club over two months later.

As reported by Relevo, two offers have now arrived and Gomez is considering his options – the first is from French side Metz and the second from Turkish outfit Fatih Karagumruk.

His free agency has caused some Serie A fans to call for the 35-year-old to return to the peninsula, but a move back looks unlikely at this stage.

During his time with Atalanta, Gomez scored 59 goals and provided 72 assists in 252 total appearances.
