Roma’s Alessandro Florenzi is facing a further five months out after undergoing knee surgery on Friday to correct a second ligament tear.
Florenzi had been closing in on a return to action after an initial ACL tear back in October, but he broke down in training with Roma’s Primavera team on Thursday.
He has since undergone surgery a second time to have the ruptured ligament reconstructed, which was deemed “a complete success” by Il Messaggero.
“Alessandro Florenzi was today subjected to arthroscopic surgery, which confirmed the traumatic rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,” read a statement on Roma’s official website.
“The transplant surgery saw [the torn ligament] subsequently replaced with [part of] the patellar tendon in his right knee.
“The player will stay in hospital for a few days and begin the therapeutic process [of his recovery] next week, with a prognosis of five months.”
The right-sider is now not expected back until July, when the Giallorossi will regroup for preseason training.
