‘Fiorentina play for someone, not something’

Vitor Hugo believes Fiorentina are a team ‘different to all the others’ as ‘we play for someone, not something’ in Davide Astori.

Fiorentina tragically lost Astori to cardiac arrest earlier in the year but have soldiered on, winning the first five games without their captain and starting this season strongly as they find themselves just two points off a Champions League spot in Serie A.

“It’s a difficult thing to explain, but Davide is really still with us,” Vitor Hugo told Corriere di Fiorentino.

“The new boys have understood this too, Astori is still in the dressing room and gives us strength before we take to the field.

“We dedicate talks to him, we’re a team different to all the others. We play for someone, not something.

“In this regard, Pioli gave us a crucial helping hand, as did our fans. Our world seemed to come crashing down, but instead they had the strength to start over.”
