Fiorentina goal-line technology over-ruled by VAR in Conference League

There was a truly strange situation during the Conference League play-off when Fiorentina scored against Braga according to the goal-line technology, but it was over-ruled by VAR.

The incident would’ve been for 2-2 with Arthur Cabral sliding in to meet the Aleksa Terzic assist.

Tiago Sa palmed it away from point-blank range and initially the goal was awarded, because the referee’s watch buzzed, signifying goal-line technology had identified it was over the line.

However, after a very long wait and on-field VAR review, the referee decided to over-rule the technology, as cameras did not show the ball completely crossing over.

It was particularly confusing, because the television coverage had shown a computer-generated image of the ball over the line.

Initial reports suggest the ball being so close to the upright confused the signal, but this is something UEFA will have to look at if the goal-line technology is becoming unreliable in certain circumstances.
