Lucien Favre concedes Borussia Dortmund ‘didn’t do well’ at the Stadio Olimpico, but insists ‘Lazio are a very good team and we needed to be exceptional.’

The Aquile won 3-1 with goals from Ciro Immobile, Luiz Felipe via a deflection and Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro, but could’ve had more.

“We didn’t do well, especially in the first half, and just didn’t control the ball properly. We were always second to every challenge, too,” said the coach in his press conference.

“The first goal came from our mistake. We were frenetic and didn’t have any patience in our build-up play. Football is a battle, if you only fight with one or two players, it becomes difficult for the rest to follow.

“We had five clear-cut scoring opportunities that we were unable to convert. There wasn’t enough determination.

“Having said all that, I want to underline that Lazio are a very good team, who were challenging Juventus for the top of the table last season. We needed an exceptional performance this evening and we didn’t have it.

“Lazio have certainly improved since we faced them in the Europa League. The fact they are in the Champions League should make that obvious.”

As Club Brugge won 2-1 away to Zenit, the Belgians and Lazio are top of the Champions League group.
