Ex-Atalanta forward Hojlund up for Kopa Trophy

Former Atalanta and current Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund has been nominated for the Kopa Trophy, an award recognising the best young players in the world over the last year.

Organised by France Football as part of the Ballon d’Or awards, the Kopa Trophy is handed to the best player aged under 21 and unlike the Golden Boy award, is open to players across the world, not just in Europe.

The list of nominees for 2023 is made up of 10 candidates: Hojlund, Pedri, Gavi, Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Jamal Musiala, Xavi Simons, Alejandro Balde, Antonio Silva and Elye Wahi.

The winner is set to be announced at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on October 30.

Hojlund, who made his debut for United in their most recent Premier League fixture against Arsenal on Sunday, was brought over to Old Trafford this summer for a fee of €75m plus €10m in add-ons, a club record sale for Atalanta.

During his one season in Serie A, the Dane chipped in with nine goals and four assists from 32 appearances, only 20 of which were starts.

Hojlund has also drawn praise from the media in England for his cameo performance against Arsenal, despite United conceding twice late on in an eventual 3-1 loss.
