Donadoni: ‘Bologna must believe’

Roberto Donadoni hopes Bologna’s 3-0 win over Sampdoria can be a valuable lesson. “The more we believe in ourselves, the better we’ll do.”

The Rossoblu were 2-0 up within 25 minutes through Simone Verdi and Ibrahima Mbaye, but despite Vasilis Torosidis seeing red before the break, they added another goal through Orji Okwonkwo.

“We go from mature to immature if we end up following this with another four consecutive defeats,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was a performance of character, belief and intensity, doing well to continue believing even after going down to 10 men. The goal we scored when a man down was even better, as Godfred Donsah and Okwonkwo didn’t stop believing in the opportunity.”

“Donsah had an extraordinary run from midfield. Okwonkwo did well to shrug off the close man-marking from Rodrigo Palacio… Rodrigo was in the perfect position too and would certainly have scored, but he’s such a gentleman, he stepped aside.

“Okwonkwo has got character, but has a long way to go and must listen when you give him advice.”

This was Bologna’s second consecutive victory after a comeback to beat Verona 3-2 on Monday night.

“The last two results must teach us not to be lazy or sluggish, as in life and in football, you get nothing that way. When you play with a man down for 45 minutes to a red card that frankly makes me smile, then win 3-0, that’s not bad.

“Every opponent has his characteristics, we must adapt to them, but also not forget our own characteristics. If we just sit back and defend, then we’ll be punished at the first error and can’t react.

“I saw a positive approach today, seeking the ball in to the box and the belief in our qualities, which are not just hit and hope the strikers can make the most of it. This was a tough test, we passed it, but there are many others to face in future.

“If you are always worried and think only of what the opposition can do, it takes the focus away from yourself and your own strengths. If you are concentrated on what you do well, then you can go 2-0 down and still stay in the game. The more we do that and believe in ourselves, the better we’ll do.

“We must cling to every point with the same tenacity we showed today.”
