The Premier League has a new Italian manager after Sunderland appointed former Lazio idol Paolo Di Canio.

The tactician, who left Swindon Town earlier this year, has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Black Cats.

Sunderland, who are only one point above the drop zone, netted Di Canio after they opted to dismiss former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill.

The 44-year-old started his managerial career at Swindon, a club he led to League One promotion, in May 2011.

Di Canio will make his Sunderland debut on Sunday when his new club travel to Stamford Bridge for a tie against Chelsea.
