Del Neri: ‘In stand-by for Samp’

Gigi Del Neri admits he is “in stand-by,” as Sampdoria want Vincenzo Montella or Francesco Guidolin.

The Blucerchiati sacked Walter Zenga this week and their first choice is Montella, but Fiorentina are refusing to let him go without a €3m release clause.

Former Udinese boss Guidolin is rapidly emerging as the second choice, overtaking Del Neri.

“For now, no situation has developed and I am in stand-by,” Del Neri told Tuttomercatoweb.

“It is pleasing to be associated to Sampdoria, as they are a top level club. We’ll see what happens, but it seems to be that Samp are seeking a different Coach.

“I was contacted a few months ago and still have a rapport with my friends there, but there’s nothing concrete. Let’s just say I am in stand-by.

“If Samp were to call back, I’d certainly be pleased. I’d be going back to a club where I left good memories. I am ready, we’ll see what happens.”

Del Neri had also been in the frame of the Palermo job, but that went to Davide Ballardini after Guidolin turned it down.

“I always kept up a rapport with Maurizio Zamparini and he called me, but the President made his choice and got Ballardini, someone who knows his job well.”
