De Zerbi coy on Benevento future

Roberto De Zerbi is unsure whether he will remain at relegated Benevento, highlighting it has been ‘a tough season.’

Despite showing considerable spirit and improvement in the second half of the campaign, Le Streghe’s instant return to Serie B was mathematically confirmed last weekend.

Ahead of today’s home match with Udinese, De Zerbi insisted that although he is not put off by the prospect of coaching in the second tier, it will be ‘difficult’ for him to remain at the club following the disappointment of relegation.

“It won’t be a choice between Benevento and another club,” the former Palermo boss told reporters.

“It will be about having the strength to start again after a tough season.

“To stay together will be difficult, so the decision will be based on that.

“It isn’t an issue of the League we are in either. I don’t feel I have done enough to depend on jobs in Serie A.

“We’ll assess it with the club in the coming weeks in a clear and sincere way.”

De Zerbi promises his side will end the season with ‘honesty’ despite having little left to play for.

“We definitely won’t gift anything to anyone, just as no one has done for us.

“I’m not saying we’ll go to war with anyone, but we will finish the season well – with sincerity and honesty.”
