De Rossi: ‘Roma cannot make this mistake against Brighton’

Daniele De Rossi warns Roma what would be ‘a big mistake’ against Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton and Hove Albion in the Europa League. ‘We need intensity, determination and mentality.’

The first leg of the Round of 16 kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 17.45 GMT.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from this game, Milan-Slavia Praha and Maccabi Haifa-Fiorentina on the LIVEBLOG.

The Giallorossi lost only one match since De Rossi took over from Jose Mourinho and qualified for the Round of 16 by eliminating Feyenoord – who dropped down from the Champions League – in the play-offs.

He had been expected to perhaps go to a three-man defence, but has stuck largely with the 4-3-3 system.

“I chose the line-up we are using recently, trying not to change too much, as we are in good form and it also suits the characteristics of our opponents,” De Rossi told Sky Sport Italia.

Roma won the Conference League and then reached the Europa League Final last season, whereas this is Brighton’s first ever European competition. Does that give them an advantage?

“If we play with intensity, technique, determination and mentality, then perhaps it will also be a sign of the experience these players have earned. However, just experience or the name of this club is not enough, we need to show we are hungry for success.

“Brighton are not afraid of anyone, they play against Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, they do it with open and attacking football and often getting a result. So if we think experience is enough to go through, we’re making a big mistake.”

It is often said in Italy that Premier League clubs have a much higher tempo than Serie A teams. Is that true?

“I don’t know, as I’ve never played in the Premier League. I hear it is tough and always difficult even against the lower teams. Having said that, I’d say in Italy there are difficulties too with the tactical focus and quality we have.

“I think we’ll be ready, no matter who we face in the build-up.”
