However, from the hour mark the Samurai Blue proved too strong, equalising through Yasuhito Endo before then taking the lead with Shinji Kagawa’s effort 20 minutes later and capping a 3-1 result with Yoichiro Kakitani’s stoppage time finish.

Costa Rica will open their World Cup campaign in Group D on June 14 against Uruguay, before facing Italy six days later and then closing out against England on June 24.
