Conte: ‘Italy not Catenaccio!’

Antonio Conte “proved Italy are not about Catenaccio” after beating European Champions Spain 2-0.

The Azzurri won with a tactical masterclass after goals from Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pellè, setting up a quarter-final with Germany.

“I knew the lads had something in them that was outside the ordinary. I said it before, because it’s easy to say that afterwards,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“I knew the lads had something in them that was outside the ordinary. I said it before, because it’s easy to say that afterwards,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“The lads were remarkable. Now we have to recover, as there’s another very tough game against Germany, but we proved that Italy are not about Catenaccio.

“Xavi gave us the best compliment, as he said Italy remind him of a mix between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. It proves those who play football understand.”

Now Italy go forward to play Germany in the quarter-finals, but Thiago Motta is suspended.

“It’s a shame about Thiago Motta, as he’s our 12th man out there. We have to prepare, it’ll be tough, maybe even tougher than it was today.”
