Conte ‘comforted’ by comeback

Antonio Conte found Italy’s performance in Bulgaria “comforting,” although they must work on leaving huge gaps through the middle.

Antonio Conte found Italy’s performance in Bulgaria “comforting,” although they must work on leaving huge gaps through the middle.

The Coach spoke at a Press conference in Sofia after the 2-2 draw with Bulgaria, a setback in Euro 2016 qualifying.

“I think Italy put in a good performance in terms of intensity, play, possession and scoring opportunities created.

“Inevitably we need to be much more determined, as when we create so much, we have to translate it into goals.

“The least comforting aspect is that we conceded twice. That’s certainly what I liked the least along with the result, as I thought this was a game we absolutely deserved to win.”

This is the first time Italy have conceded two goals in a single game since facing Nigeria in 2013 and both were counter-attacks through the middle.

“When in possession we try to give width and bring players in front of the ball. On the one hand that’s positive, but on the other if the two internal midfielders go forward and wide, then if you lose the ball the opposition can go clear on goal.

“We have to do much better in these situations and if a pass is misplaced we need more players back there to clean up.”

Italy are now second in Group H on 11 points, while Croatia have gone clear on 13 after hammering Norway 5-1.

“I am not annoyed by this, because Croatia at this moment are a stronger side than Italy. I think we’ll challenge for qualification with Croatia and Norway, but are working to bridge that gap that divides us from the Croatians.”

Conte was asked whether the controversy in the build-up, which also involved losing players like Claudio Marchisio and Gigi Buffon right before the game, had affected the team.

“In my view, this squad is accustomed to being in the middle of chaos. Having said that, we just need to concentrate, do our work, let the others speak and stay united to put in good performances despite the setbacks.

“In that sense, I am pleased and the response from the team was certainly comforting.”
