Commisso: ‘We want to do better’

Fiorentina patron Rocco Commisso has claimed coach Beppe Iachini ‘made a substantial difference’ and claimed no other Presidents have ‘done as well in their first year in Italy’ as he did in Florence.

Fiorentina patron Rocco Commisso has claimed coach Beppe Iachini ‘made a substantial difference’ and claimed no other Presidents have ‘done as well in their first year in Italy’ as he did in Florence.

The Viola ended the season at 10th in Serie A and Iachini was confirmed for 2020-21 and the President doesn’t understand why some of the club’s faithful are disappointed with the decision.

“We did well with Iachini,” Commisso said at a press conference. “We had a great defence and we finished above many teams that are talked about a lot, including catching up with [Ivan] Juric’s Verona, who have been talked about a lot.

“The difference that Iachini made was substantial, when one has the opportunity to work with me and achieves the objectives, it’s right that he deserves reconfirmation.

“I don’t understand the Florentines who didn’t want Iachini’s confirmation, also because the decision is made in agreement with the fans.”

Commisso claims no other Presidents have started like him in Italy.

“They asked me to do like Atalanta, but there are many differences. [The Orobici President Antonio] Percassi has played football for many years and know the environment better than I do.

“Since he became President, it took six years, hands on, to arrive in Europe. Rocco, in his first year did better than Percassi and Bologna. Let’s remember that Lazio needed many years to establish themselves, the same goes for Napoli.

“Let’s not forget that six players and our manager had Covid. Nobody did as well as Rocco in his first year in Italy.”

But the Viola patron is not content with doing well and has ambitions ‘to win’ with Fiorentina.

“We want to do better; I would like to win. However, I’m practical. It’s very difficult to finish the second year among the top teams, given the competition.

“I can’t guarantee a position, but I can say that I want to be on the left side of the table and do better than this season. I have a dream to get as high as possible."
