The Romanian has less than a year left on his present agreement, which expires in June 2012, but talks have been put on hold.
"I don't know if Inter intend to renew Chivu's contract," agent Ioan Becali stated to Interistaweb on Friday.
"The club is going through some difficult times right now and contract matters will be the last thing on their minds.
"However, we'll talk towards November or December at the very latest, but for now it is just too soon.
"Chivu, though, is one of them and the club will think about things very carefully."
The defender, who can play at left-back and in the middle, cost the Nerazzurri €16m in 2007 after four years at Roma.
