Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino explains why Benny Carbone resigned and his plans for Elland Road.
The ex-Cagliari patron sold his club after 20 years to take over the English Championship side, whose season begins today.
“In Italy I was no longer allowed to run a club, but I didn’t want to just throw my experience away,” Cellino told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“In England I am given the chance to work more seriously. Our objective is to prove we are able to do well in England and reconstruct a prestigious club like Leeds.
“It has been devastated by a financial crisis and money burned away in spades. Our main capital is represented by the fans, as few clubs in England can boast a following like ours.”
Cellino is known for tinkering with his staff, but insists Carbone left a Leeds consultancy role just months after signing on “due to family problems. He couldn’t give his all and here I need people 100 per cent committed. I can’t allow discounts and must be even more demanding with the Italians.
“We want to buy Elland Road by December, as it’s madness to pay £1.5m per year to rent out the stadium. We want to own our home.”
The season didn't start well for Leeds United, who lost 2-0 to Millwall today.
