Cairo: ‘Milan asked for Belotti’

Torino President Urbano Cairo confirms Milan asked for Andrea Belotti last season, but “I doubt they’d ask again,” while rejecting offers for M’Baye Niang.

The Granata won the Primavera Coppa Italia for youth teams last night, as Toro beat Milan 1-0 at San Siro.

“I had spoken to the Milan directors last year about Belotti,” Cairo confessed to Sky Sport Italia.

“I didn’t want to sell the player and he didn’t have a release clause valid for Italian clubs. Andrea just had an unlucky campaign, mainly due to injuries, so obviously his numbers aren’t as impressive as last term, but he’s a player I want to relish for next season.

“I doubt they’d ask me for him again.”

Milan did do business with Torino, selling them striker Niang for €14m, who has struggled and slipped down the pecking order.

“He has this injury and can’t play. Niang had some excellent moments, such as when he replaced Belotti as a centre-forward. Perhaps that is his true role, but he can also do well as a winger.

“I think Niang has this enormous potential, which is why in January I turned down offers that were higher than the price I paid for him.”
