“We had never invested so much in a single transfer window, but we really wanted to do well,” Cairo told Radio Sportiva.

“It was a strong start by strengthening the defence with Armando Izzo and Bremer, then Soualiho Meite for the midfield. In the final week, we brought in Ola Aina and Koffi Djidji, then Soriano and Zaza to give a spectacular finale to our campaign.”

Sampdoria were furious with Zaza’s “very bad agent” for seemingly switching to Toro at the last minute, but Cairo insists that wasn’t the case.

“We had been tracking Zaza for a month, he was an objective we were working on quietly.”

As with every summer, there were rumours of losing Andrea Belotti, this time to Napoli rather than Milan.

“I never spoke to Aurelio De Laurentiis about Belotti,” assured Cairo.
