Berlusconi: ‘Monza should’ve reached Serie A last year but the referee…’

Silvio Berlusconi reflected on his Monza side’s promotion to Serie A last season and their ambitions ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Last season, the Lombardy side finished 4th in the regular season in Serie B, enough to earn them a spot in the play-offs. In the semi-finals, they dispatched Brescia 4-2 on aggregate, winning both legs, and in the finals they secured a hard-fought 6-4 aggregate win over Pisa, booking them a spot in Serie A.

Speaking to Rtl 102.5, Berlusconi first suggested that Monza should’ve been promoted to Serie A last year, had it not been for an officiating decision.

“We should’ve reached Serie A a year earlier, but then we encountered a referee who denied us a goal.

“However, now we have been promoted, we hope we won’t crumble and will stay there also thanks to the transfer window campaign we’ve done.”

He then suggested that his previous comments about Monza’s European ambitions were not too serious.

“Europe? What I said some time ago were jokes…”

Monza have spent over €20m this summer as they look to strengthen their squad, bringing in players like Andrea Carboni, Gianluca Caprari, Alessio Cragno, Stefano Sensi and Matteo Pessina as they look to avoid the drop back to Serie B.
