Andrea Belotti “could never have dreamed of a night like that” after his brace helped Italy Under-21s beat Serbia 3-2.
The Azzurrini were 2-0 down after 12 minutes in the crunch European Championship qualifier last night, but Belotti’s double and a Domenico Berardi strike turned it all around.
“I could never have dreamed of a night like that, especially after we went 2-0 down,” the Palermo striker told reporters.
“We always believed in ourselves and I am happy to have scored two important goals for this victory.
“We didn’t let our heads drop and started moving the ball around, just like the Coach asked. We proved against Serbia that young Italian players are there and just want to prove themselves. We just need a little faith.”
That result means if Italy beat Cyprus at Castel di Sangro on Tuesday, they will top Group 9 and enter the play-offs.
“It was a struggle to win, but with sacrifice and generosity we did it. Those are two of my main characteristics.
“In every game I know that I have to give my all, regardless of whether I am wearing the Italy or the Palermo jersey.
“I wear them both with pride, because there are so many guys my age who’d love to be in my place. I always thank the Coach for putting their faith in me.”
