Davide Ballardini is happy with Genoa’s performance despite their defeat against Sassuolo.

The Grifone lost the first game under their new coach after one win and one draw in the previous two matches.

“We didn’t win, but the performance was a nice gift from my players,” said Ballardini, who turns 57 today.

“We had a few goal scoring opportunities, we were competitive, but we still need something more. We need to be more aggressive and handle the ball better. It’s a good starting point, because the team is united.”

Genoa remain involved in the race for Serie A survival with 11 points in 16 games.

“I don’t look at the table, I look at the next match," Ballardini insisted.

“That’s what we need to do, now we are focused on Bologna.”

Eldor Shomurodov scored one goal and was praised by his coach who, however, doesn’t want the striker to hear compliments.

“He was nice to see and efficient too. Luckily he doens’t understand Italian, he only speaks English,” he said with a smile.

“He played a great game, but it’s better to say nothing.”
