Balbo: ‘Dzeko is mentally weak’

Roma legend Abel Balbo hails Francesco Totti, but Edin Dzeko “is weak and doesn’t deserve another chance.”

The striker is celebrating his 50th birthday today and still keeps a close eye on his former club.

“Totti deserves his contract renewal and proved all his critics wrong,” Balbo told Radio Centro Suono Sport.

“I am very happy that he is playing on and believe everyone is gaining from it. This isn’t a gift to Totti, as some people said, as Francesco dragged Roma up in the final weeks of the season.

“He is an absolute leader and I think he can still be important for the team. He also has given so much to Roma that he deserves this recognition.”

Argentine hitman Balbo had a less positive view of misfiring Dzeko.

“I don’t know him personally, but from the outside he seems weak mentally. When you get a season wrong, if you have pride and desire, you don’t even go on vacation. You stay behind and work to prove yourself.

“That’s what happened to me at Udinese, I wanted to win back people’s trust. In a club like Roma, if you let your head drop then it becomes really tough.

“I honestly wouldn’t give Dzeko another chance, it’s too risky.”

The Giallorossi surged up the standings under Luciano Spalletti and finished the season in third place.

“Roma are very close to Juventus, but need to plan things better on the market, not selling big players every year. In Turin they work these things out and it’s no coincidence they keep winning.”
