Milan finally gave Atalanta their approval to the request, with the Champions League debutants unable to host matches at their ground due to it not meeting UEFA standards.

After captain Alejandro Gomez wrote an Instagram post expressing his gratitude, President Antonio Percassi followed up with his own statement of appreciation.

“I want to thank, personally and on behalf of Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, FC Internazionale, AC Milan and their owners for this prestigious opportunity granted to us,” it read.

“Being able to play at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on the occasion of our first, historic participation in the next edition of the Champions League fills us with joy and is a huge source of pride for us.

“Being able to contest the most important cup competition at San Siro represents something truly historic for Atalanta.

“We’ll do this by trying to honour this great opportunity in the best possible way and, above all, with huge and sincere respect for the two clubs and their respective fan bases who, at this stadium, have been able to make history in Italian and world football.

“Our heartfelt thanks also go to Milan’s city council and its mayor Giuseppe Sala, who immediately accepted our request with great sportsmanship.

“Finally, our thanks also go to US Sassuolo and their owners, as well as the city of Reggio Emilia.

“In the last two seasons, they’ve supported us with friendship, giving us the chance to play in the Europa League at Mapei Stadium, always making us truly feel at home. Thank you very much.”
