Houssem Aouar suggested he ‘couldn’t lose the opportunity to be coached by a phenomenon’ when deciding to join Roma on a free transfer this summer.
The 25-year-old ended a career long association with Olympique Lyon after leaving on a free transfer at the start of this month, joining up with the Giallorossi and penning a five-year contract.
Aouar is one of three signings completed by Roma in the first month of the summer transfer window, alongside fellow free transfer Evan Ndicka and Leeds United loanee Rasmus Kristensen.
Speaking to Corriere dello Sport via Calciomercato.com, Aouar first underlined the reasons why he decided to join up with Roma this summer.
“Mourinho was fundamental for my move to Roma, I couldn’t lose the opportunity to be coached by a phenomenon.
“Pinto has shown that he really wants me. But when you live here it’s easier to convince someone, the real attraction is Rome.”
He touched on some of his midfield inspirations.
“Zidane was unique and unique, I will never reach his level. He is my favourite player for his technique and elegance.
“Grenier at Lyon facilitated my integration when I was young, I haven’t forgotten when he helped and protected me.”
The 25-year-old commented on some of the advice he received before making the move.
“During the days we were negotiating, I heard from both Grenier and Garcia, they told me about a magnificent place with extraordinary fans.
“I already noticed this while wandering the street, I immediately had the feeling that the whole city follows football and you support Roma.”
He doesn’t consider Roma a steppingstone for his career.
“I’m an ambitious person and I’ve always aimed to play in a great team, now that I’ve got there, I have to prove I deserve it. I don’t consider it as a moment of transition, it would be wrong.”
The Algerian spoke about his role in the midfield.
“For two years I played two in front of the defence, if the coach should decide for me to line up in that role, I’d be available.
“With Pellegrini there will be no competition, I’ve always thought that strong players should play together.”
Finally, Aouar discussed some of his new Roma teammates.
“Dybala has a special talent, you can see it every day in training. But the same thing can be said for Pellegrini and El Shaarawy also has incredible numbers.
“The teammate I spend the most time with is N’Dicka, but I think it’s normal both speaking French.”
