Ancelotti: ‘No Napoli regrets’

Carlo Ancelotti insists Napoli “should have no regrets” at their Champions League exit to Liverpool. “We did more than anyone expected.”

The Partenopei would go through to the Round of 16 as long as they avoided defeat, especially as even 2-1 or 3-2 was enough.

However, Mohamed Salah sealed a 1-0 result at Anfield this evening.

The Partenopei would go through to the Round of 16 as long as they avoided defeat, especially as even 2-1 or 3-2 was enough.

However, Mohamed Salah sealed a 1-0 result at Anfield this evening.

“We have to accept it, even if this is very disappointing, as we did everything we could. Over the six games, we perhaps did more than anyone expected and came very close to qualification, so there are no regrets,” Ancelotti told Sky Sport Italia.

“We take these performances to the Europa League and will use that as motivation to go forward in that tournament too.

“We lacked a little sharpness when building the forward play, as Liverpool pressed us very high and in the second half it was more disorganised from both sides.

“It’s true that Liverpool had chances on the counter, but that’s because we needed to score and so were a little more unbalanced. Arkadiusz Milik scored a fantastic goal a week ago in Bergamo and almost did it again with a wonderful first touch.

“Having a few difficulties against the side that lost the Champions League Final last season is hardly that surprising.”

Paris Saint-Germain won 4-1 away to Red Star Belgrade and qualify for the next round.

“You can try to look back over regrets, like Angel Di Maria scoring in the last minute, but I don’t think there ought to be regrets. We did all we could, were a little unlucky and now hope to rediscover that luck in the Europa League.”
