Agent: ‘Hamsik happy for Mertens’

Marek Hamsik’s agent says the midfielder is ‘very happy’ Dries Mertens broke Napoli’s goalscoring record and that he could return after he retires.

Hamsik was the highest scorer in Napoli’s history with 122 goals, but he was finally beaten last night by Mertens, whose equaliser against Inter also ensured the Partenopei reached their first Coppa Italia Final since 2014.

“Dries and Marek are close friends,” Juri Venglos told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“I know for sure that Marek’s very happy with the path Mertens has taken and the record he’s broken.

“Either way, Hamsik’s second in this special ranking and he’s obviously happy. Hamsik will watch the Final between Napoli and Juventus on Wednesday.

“He’ll cheer for Napoli, there’s no doubt about it. Among other things, it’s a game that he played in Rome against Juventus himself, lifting the Coppa Italia to the heavens.

“Marek wants to play for a few more years, probably two or three. In my opinion, he could return to Slovakia once he retires, just as he could return to Napoli because Naples is also his home.”

Venglos was then asked whether the Dalian Professional man, who turns 33 next month, could go back to the San Paolo one day.

“Of course, he’d be happy to! I don’t know which role he would fill. We should talk about it and discuss it with the club, but I don’t see why not.

“However, I repeat, it won’t be for another 2-3 years because Marek still wants to play. We hope the Chinese league starts up again in mid-July. It’s possible, so let’s see.”

Rafa Benitez has been linked with a return to Newcastle United if their Saudi takeover goes through, so will Hamsik and Dalian start the new season with the Spaniard?

“Yes, with him in the dugout.”
