FIGC President Giancarlo Abete is glad Italy begin Euro 2012 against Spain. “It means we won’t meet them again until the Final.”

The Azzurri are in Group C with Spain, the Republic of Ireland and Croatia with their first match against the reigning European and World champions.

“We have an exciting start against Spain, then we meet an old friend like Giovanni Trapattoni,” said Abete.

“It’s not bad as a group and is certainly better than Group B, in which any of the four teams (Holland, Germany, Portugal and Denmark) can qualify.

“If Spain are, as everyone believes them to be, the favourites then it’s better to be in their group.

“It means that if we go forward then we won’t meet them again until the Final, at the end of the road, and not in the first knock-out round the way it went in Euro 2008.

“I can also confirm our training camp will be near to Krakow and we will stay there even if we carry on in the competition.”
