Sir Alex Ferguson should choose his successor at Manchester United, says Watford tactician Gianfranco Zola.
The 71-year-old today confirmed that he will step down at the end of the season after leading the club to another Premiership title.
Everton boss David Moyes is the early favourite to replace him, even if Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho is also a contender amongst others.
“I would give Ferguson the possibility to select his replacement,” the former Italian international forward told Sky Sport 24.
“Knowing how much the club means to him, he will give a helping hand and an important contribution to whichever manager comes in.”
Ferguson is a legend of the European game after spending 26 years in the Old Trafford hotseat.
“The thing that has always struck me about Ferguson is, no matter what players he had at his disposal, his side never gave anything up,” Zola added.
“Even if United were losing 2-0 or 3-0, they were always able to turn around the situation. His teams always fought until the very end.
“He was also able to meet the expectations of a club who always had big ambitions.”
