Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee travelled to Liverpool on Tuesday night to say hello to his former Bologna teammates and wish them luck ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Arne Slot’s side at Anfield.

The 23-year-old joined United from Bologna for around €45m plus significant add-ons in the summer.

As confirmed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, he made the 35 mile journey west from Manchester to Liverpool on Tuesday night and spent around an hour with his old teammates until around 21.30 local time on the eve of their historic Champions League clash.

Zirkzee sought permission from his current employers at United before making the journey over.

Bologna will be taking part in their first away game in the Champions League or European Cup since the preliminary rounds of the 1964-65 edition.

Zirkzee played an important role in helping the Rossoblu return to Europe under Thiago Motta last season, scoring 11 goals and laying on five assists as Bologna finished fifth on 68 points.
