Piotr Zielinski admits Napoli players take ‘the responsibility’ and ought to do more after a 2-0 defeat to Granada in the Europa League.

The Partenopei were decimated by injuries and had only 12 senior outfield players available in Spain for the first leg of their Round of 32 tie.

“It’s difficult to explain. We knew Granada were a tough squad who defend and press well. We could’ve avoided the two goals,” the Poland international told Sky Sport Italia.

“Now we can only try to avoid those mistakes again, because they make games an uphill struggle. The first half was not good, we did better after the break.

“The injuries are making a big difference, as there are nine or 10 important players for us who are out of action. Having said that, we’ve got quality throughout the squad.

“It’s not like we want to lose or draw games. We give our all to win. We’re missing some determination in front of goal and I accept the blame too, because there were two chances tonight where I should’ve done better. We certainly have to convert more of our scoring opportunities.

“We are lacking something, that’s for sure. We have so much quality, but need to help more from the midfield when it comes to creating and scoring chances.”

With so much criticism on coach Gennaro Gattuso, it seems that Zielinski and the players are taking the blame upon themselves.

“The responsibility is certainly ours as players. Looking at the team, we have so much quality and we need to make that count in games like this. We have to do more and scoring even one goal here would’ve changed the shape of the tie.”
