Zinedine Zidane says he understands Ishak Belfodil’s decision to join Livorno on loan from Inter in January.

The Algerian forward’s playing time had been severely limited since arriving at San Siro and the 41-year-old believes the spell with the Amaranto will serve him well.

“You can’t improve without playing,” Zidane told the media. “Training without playing for one or two years can be tough for a player.

“There is nothing like competitive football, training cannot replace it.

“So I understand Ishak’s ambition to go to a big club like Inter but they will undoubtedly have told him that although he would get his chance, it wouldn’t last for long.

“You can’t not play for two or three years. If he has chosen to leave it’s because he has understood he needs to be playing.

“This is even more the case this year because he has the chance to go to the World Cup and he wants to seize it.”
