It was a dramatic night at the Bernabeu, as Juve wiped out the 3-0 first leg result and were 30 seconds away from extra time when a penalty was awarded for a Medhi Benatia nudge on Lucas Vazquez, converted by Cristiano Ronaldo.

“When you concede a goal within two minutes, you’ve got to get your head down and put in the performance of a lifetime,” said Zidane in his Press conference.

“We did badly, not so much in goal-scoring opportunities, but in just controlling the game.”

Juve and particularly captain Gigi Buffon were absolutely furious at the penalty decision.

“I didn’t see it, but I’ve been told it was a penalty. The referee blew the whistle and you can’t change that. I think it was a penalty.

“We are in the semi-final now and I’d rather talk about the game. Juve played well, but we believed to the end and over the two legs deserved to go through.”

The Coach made some surprising decisions, using 21-year-old Jesus Vallejo in defence for suspended Sergio Ramos and picking Gareth Bale rather than Karim Benzema.

Bale was then hauled off at half-time for a double change.

“I had to make changes, as I wasn’t happy with the way we were playing. It wasn’t to punish Gareth, I just didn’t like the way the whole team was playing. It was nothing against him or Casemiro.

“I didn’t expect to concede in the first couple of minutes. We had the chances to score, not so much in the second half, but we still have players capable of changing a game.”

Buffon was sent off in what is probably the final Champions League appearance of his career.

“I don’t think he deserved the red card, but I do believe that this doesn’t cancel out anything he did in his career. He is an enormous player and will always remain so.”
