Inter President Steven Zhang admits Antonio Conte ‘was right’ to push them into spending big for Romelu Lukaku. ‘He is special, not just as a player.’

The Nerazzurri shelled out €80m to prise him from Manchester United in 2019 and he proved to be a key figure in winning the Serie A title, as well as reaching the Europa League Final.

“Lukaku is special, not just as a player who scores lots of goals, but as a person,” Zhang told Sky Sport Italia.

“He has this big heart, he is friendly with everyone, affectionate, polite, he shows respect towards everyone. It’s rare to find someone with such a big heart.

“I remember two years ago that Conte insisted we sign him and he was right to push us into this investment. He was the right player.”

That will be the last huge investment for a while, because Inter are forced to cut costs following a loss of revenue during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, not entirely unconnected, another row erupted in the local council in Milan over restructuring San Siro.

“It is very important that we build an innovative structure, so the club can give a top level experience to its fans. Without that, we would remain behind other clubs who have already provided a better structure for their fans.”
