Walter Zenga admits his young Sampdoria team will have “ups and downs” and they “should be helped”.

The Blucerchiati went down 2-1 to Atalanta tonight, but the Coach calls for understanding from the club’s fans.

“We had a 17-year-old lad [Pedro Pereira] at right-back,” Zenga pointed out in an interview with Sky.

“He didn’t have a great game tonight, but it’s not possible to say anything about it. He’s a lad who should be helped.

“There’s also [Michele] Rocca who is a young [19-year-old] midfielder, who played at the back. I’m not making excuses, but in football those who win celebrate, and the loser explains.

“If we have a philosophy we can’t change it after a few matches. When you’re playing with so many youngsters, you have to budget for a few ups and downs.

“We have a very technical team, who at times can be made to suffer by our opponents. We know that at times we’re good, but when we’re under pressure, if your technique isn’t supported by everyone then we can be left short.

“After the own-goal we had two chances to equalise, then after the break, with our best chance, [Atalanta goalkeeper Marco] Sportiello made a great save.

“In general we weren’t brilliant, and we were lacking a bit this evening in terms of our play.”
