Sunday sees Stefano Pioli’s debut on the Nerazzurri bench, in the Derby della Madonnina against Milan.

Having spoken to Ruud Gullit to get the Rossoneri point of view, Gazzetta dello Sport sat down with the former goalkeeper.

“The Champions League? I’d say it’s complicated,” Zenga explained.

“But of course Inter have a duty to try. As for the Derby, there’s never a real favourite, it’s a game of unknowns and right now Inter are full of unknowns.

“The example would be this: I was in Wolverhampton for 87 days, and in that time Inter had three Coaches. It’s not easy to recover from a blow like that.

“With 26 games to go, Inter have 17 points. Roma finished third with 80 last season. The calculation is simple.”

Did Wolves have less patience with him, or Inter with De Boer?

“Wolverhampton with me, definitely. But we had one thing in common: Chinese owners…”

Zenga was also asked about Milan’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and whether he can become the best goalkeeper in the world.

“Yes, but I’m a stickler so only if he improves in two little things,” the former Italy number one said.

“Namely covering his post and handling situations quickly in the six-yard box. Me in my time, then [Gianluigi] Buffon and tomorrow him: the best goalkeeper in the world is always Italian. It’s beautiful for our football.”
