Walter Zenga insists the “beating will do us good” after Sampdoria suffered an historic 4-0 defeat to Vojvodina.

This was the heaviest ever home loss for Samp, or indeed any Italian side, in European competition.

“We got a real beating today and it will do us good, as we are forced to reflect on what happened,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“In my view the first 10 minutes of each half completely transformed the game. We had some chances to equalise with four or five positive situations.

“However, when we got back on the field, instead of showing patience we gave the third goal away on the counter-attack. At that point, the situation got heavy.”

After the final whistle, Zenga went under the curva to confront protesting fans and took full responsibility.

“When a team wins, you go to celebrate with the fans. When you lose, you have to go and apologise. In my view, the Coach has to stand in front of his players. If we had won, I would’ve left the celebrations to them.

“I am not someone who looks for excuses. I came here on July 1 and tried certain things, then I had to put together the line-up today with some players who picked up a virus.

“These are not excuses, because in any case we still sent out 11 players and seven on the bench. There are no excuses. A team that loses 4-0 simply has to analyse the fact three goals were conceded in the opening 10 minutes of each half.”

The second leg is in Novi Sad on August 6.
