After the final whistle, Coach Zenga led the players over to salute the fans, who were jeering loudly and urging them to go away.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano threw his gloves to the crowd only to have them hurled straight back at him.

Zenga mimed amid the deafening jeers “It’s my fault. Blame me. Don’t blame the players.”

President Ferrero then walked out on his own to salute the supporters and applauded them, kissing the Sampdoria scarf that was around his neck.

Ironically, Ferrero had commented yesterday: "God sent us Vojvodina so we could beat them 4-0."
