In an interview with Tuttomercatoweb, the former Roma and Lazio coach showed some rather antiquated views when asked on his opinion about women’s football in Italy.

He defended his own words and has claimed he was only pointing towards the reason for it growing slower in Italy.

“I was thinking about helping women who must emancipate themselves,” he told Centro Suono Sport. “It was not to offend women, quite the opposite.

“Women’s football has never bothered me and I’m happy it’s growing.

“The question was why women’s football has arrived later in Italy. I replied that it was because of the Italian mentality, where they picture the women in the kitchen. That’s it.”
