The Coach officially terminated his agreement with FC Lugano after just one year at the Swiss club.

“I always felt good at Lugano in terms of the environment, but unfortunately from a football point of view I cannot say the same,” Zeman told ITA Sport Press.

“The club didn’t have much money to spend and I had to work with players who were not suited to the Super League. I can say it was a real achievement to secure safety and we even went close to lifting the Swiss Cup.

“With this squad it was very difficult to play the kind of football I like. I had to adapt, using the material the directors put at my disposal, but frankly the players were not up to the task and at the end I consider safety the greatest sporting miracle of my career.”

Zeman has already been linked with jobs at Pescara, his former club, and newly-promoted Crotone.

“I terminated my time in Switzerland because of football matters and do not have another contract lined up. It might seem strange, but I have no negotiations in progress, nor have I spoken to anyone in Italy.

“I’d like to come back to Serie A, but only as long as there’s an interesting project.”

Zeman was also asked about Italy’s chances at Euro 2016 this summer.

“It is the type of tournament won by the team that is in the best form. In that sense Italy can have their say, even if they don’t have world class players.

“After all, Denmark won the Euros a few years ago by taking advantage of favourable circumstances. You could say the same about Marcello Lippi’s Italy at the 2006 World Cup, as they won with the strength of the group.”
