The 28-year-old moved on loan to Genoa from Chelsea last summer, having spent 2019-20 with Roma in Serie A.

Zappacosta suffered a cruciate ligament injury during his spell with the Giallorossi last term and was out for a month with coronavirus until October, before he struggled with injury from late October to December with the Grifone this term.

He has returned to play an important role under Davide Ballardini since January and has been a regular in an unbeaten run of six Serie A games.

“I’m having a great time here, I’ve never lived in a seaside town and I must say that I honestly like the idea a lot,” he told Il Secolo XIX.

“There are many days when I wake up with the sun and see the sea. This puts you in a good mood. I feel really good here in this city, but also with my teammates.”

The defender is going through a good moment, having come through difficult periods of injuries and coronavirus.

“I don’t give up, I’ve never done,” he said. “My father taught me never to give up. I think the difficulties strengthen you.

“He’s not the type to comment a lot, and if he really has to, he will tease me about the negative things, about the mistakes.

“But, I repeat, it’s he who has transmitted me the value of never giving up. As a kid he trained me for a year and never let me play, so that I wouldn’t be ‘the son of.’ But I trained well and he told me: ‘Keep it up, you will take away your satisfaction, never give up’.”
