Cristian Zapata’s agent claims the out-of-contract defender has chosen Genoa because he was “convinced by their project.”

The former Milan centre-back turned down proposals from Sampdoria, Bologna and Sassuolo, preferring to join the Ligurian club instead.

“Cristian has given up the chance to play for so many other teams and a lot of money because he is convinced by the project that Genoa have,” the Colombian’s agent Ivan Cordoba told the Secolo XIX newspaper.

Zapata is available on a free transfer and will reportedly sign a two-year deal with the Grifone, but he is currently on international duty with his country at the Copa America in Brazil.

The 32-year-old’s contract with the Rossoneri ran down this summer after he spent seven years at San Siro, making 148 appearances during his time there.
