Nicolò Zaniolo showed the damage to his face after winning a 99th-minute Roma penalty to beat Spezia. ‘The important thing was the three points…’

The forward came off the bench at the Stadio Alberto Picco, as he was not 100 per cent fit.

He certainly made an impact on the game, as in stoppages he went into a diving header on the corner, hitting the crossbar with both that and the follow-up.

VAR then intervened to suggest an on-field review, as Riccardo Maggiore’s foot was high and he caught Zaniolo on the face.

If there had been any doubt about the contact, that was cast aside when Zaniolo took a picture showing the extent of the damage to his face.

“The important thing was the three points…” he wrote on the Instagram post.

His Roma teammates joined in the joke, as the Italian word for ‘points’ is also the same one used for ‘stitches.’

“Yep, three stitches in your face! You’re fantastic,” wrote Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Meanwhile, some fans thanked the young man for ‘sacrificing your face for us.’
