Roma forward Nicolò Zaniolo said he’s not ‘in a hurry to get back’ but the Italy international vowed to return ‘in time’ for Euro 2020.

The Italian midfielder picked up two different knee injuries in 2020, the first one on January 12 against Juventus in Serie A and the second one against The Netherlands in a Nations League match with Italy.

He underwent two knee surgeries, the last one this past September and he should reportedly return to training in Trigoria next month.

The 21-year-old stressed he won’t rush anything but claimed he will be back in time to feature for Italy in Euro 2020 next summer.

“I’m not in a hurry, I’m working well,” Zaniolo told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Every day I come to Trigoria.

“After the last visit to Innsbruck, the workload will increase and when the right and left leg have the same strength and my head will be ready, I will come back calmly.

“I have a career ahead and we can’t force anything or get caught up in the desire to play two or three games.

“The career is at stake, the future. More or less April. At the most. In time for the European Championship.”

Zaniolo started in Genoa’s academy, before he moved to Fiorentina and then Entella. He then moved to Inter for €1.8m and spent one season with the Nerazzurri.

In July 2018, Roma picked up the youngster for a reported €4.5m and he extended his deal until 2024 the following summer.

Zaniolo, capped 12 times by Italy so far, said he’s ‘delighted’ to play for the Giallorossi and felt lucky to arrive in such a ‘splendid city’.

“I think Inter always need players who are ready,” he said. “Already prepared and maybe at that moment I wasn’t.

“It was their choice, but I thank them for transferring me to Roma. They let me arrive in a splendid city like this and in a solid club.

“Playing here is great, for the fans, for the city. I’m delighted to be at the Giallorossi.”
