The Roma and Italy starlet picked up two knee injuries in 2020, the last one in a Nations League tie between the Azzurri and the Netherlands in September.

Zaniolo was supposed to return to the pitch in April, but professor Fink visited him in Innsbruck yesterday and decided to postpone his return to action.

La Gazzetta dello Sport clarifies Zaniolo’s left leg has about 10 per cent less muscle tone than the right one, so it is better not to take any risk.

“I am disappointed, but my target is to be ready for the World Cup next year,” Zaniolo told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Nicolò was devastated the other day. He had the same mood to the day he injured his knees. Now, slowly, he begins to feel better, even if he has an uncontainable desire to play inside,” his father Igor added.

According to the report, Zaniolo will return to train with the rest of the group between the end of April and the beginning of May, but he won’t be involved in any competitive game.

“Let’s wait and see,” Italy coach Roberto Mancini claimed.

“I know there are 70 per cent of chances he won’t be with us, but Nicolò must remain calm,” the coach added.

“He has a whole career ahead, and he must not rush because he can’t take any risk. We’ll follow him until the end because we know his worth well. Things like this can happen in football.”
