Inter Primavera boss Stefano Vecchi believes Nicolo Zaniolo can become ‘a phenomenon’ after his match-winning display against Juventus.

Zaniolo’s 31st-minute header secured Inter a 1-0 victory over Juve in the Primavera semi-finals, prompting Vecchi to state the Nerazzurri had a gem on their hands in the 18-year-old midfielder.

“It was key to defend very well and give very little to a team with important attacking potential, and today we gave them very little, only a few corners and shorts from distance,” he said after the game.

“It was key to defend very well and give very little to a team with important attacking potential, and today we gave them very little, only a few corners and shorts from distance,” he said after the game.

“This win stemmed from a defensive attitude in their midfield. Zaniolo? He’s strong, physical and has important quality.

“He’s not always been able to bring out the potential he has. He must improve, but he’ll become a phenomenal player if he does.

“Back three? It was dictated by our opponents and the hope of playing in three days’ time. We would’ve used up too much [energy] with the 4-3-3 we usually use.

“This formation lets our youngsters grow. We’d already used it at the Viareggio Tournament.”
