Former Inter captain and current vice-President Javier Zanetti has slammed Romelu Lukaku’s behaviour and his dealings with the club over the course of this summer in a recent interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Argentine told the paper that he expected Lukaku to behave differently in his current situation given what the club had done for him in recent years.

The relationship between Inter and Lukaku collapsed earlier in the summer when it was revealed that the Belgian had been entertaining proposals from other clubs despite the Nerazzurri’s hopes of signing him permanently from parent club Chelsea.

“Given what Inter has done for him, we expected him to behave differently, as a professional and as a man,” Zanetti told La Gazzetta, printed on page four of Wednesday morning’s edition.

He continued: “He has the right to go where he wants, of course, but he could have told us that beforehand.

“Nobody is bigger than the club and when building a team, you always have to consider who you are bringing into the dressing room.”

Elsewhere in his interview, Zanetti recounted the Champions League final loss against Manchester City and revealed that he thought Inter were a touch unlucky in the final in Istanbul.

“I was expecting a final like this, played on an equal footing and with courage. What was missing was capitalising on a few chances and a little bit more luck, but we are proud of the team.”

Zanetti also spoke of Inter’s new captain and compatriot Lautaro Martinez, who he believes possesses all the qualities required to become a leader at the highest level.

“He is on the right path and he is humble,” Zanetti explained.  “I am happy with Lautaro’s progress. Leadership comes with even more responsibility, but he has a sense of belonging and knows how to set an example. This is what a captain does.”

  1. You know you’ve done some serious damage when the legendary Capitano Mr Z has harsh words for you.

    Shame on you lukaku.

  2. The biggest problem was that they were dealing with a man who have a 9 years old baby brain. It was not the first time Lakaka behaved like this and it is not the last one either…
