Paolo Zanetti is in real danger of becoming the first coach in Serie A to lose his job this season after a winless start to the 2023-24 campaign, and recent reports suggest that the division’s 20th-placed side have postponed Monday morning’s training session.

Calciomercato.com reported on Monday morning that following four consecutive defeats and a 7-0 humiliation at the hands of Roma on Sunday, Zanetti’s future with Empoli is far from guaranteed.

Sporting director Pietro Accardi said after the game that the club would need to: “take time to reflect,” after what has been a disappointing start to the new campaign.

Empoli did lose key players over the summer transfer window in Guglielmo Vicario and Fabiano Parisi, but the replacements so far, Calcioercato writes, have not been up to scratch.

Now having conceded 12 goals in four games and with a tricky visit from league leaders Inter coming up next weekend, Zanetti and Empoli’s immediate prospects aren’t exactly promising.

Later on Monday morning, reports from Calciomercato’s Daniele Longo noted that Empoli had postponed Monday morning’s scheduled training, an indication that Zanetti is likely in a bit of trouble.

Calciomercato writes that if Zanetti were to be dismissed, Empoli would turn their attention to Salernitana’s Davide Nicola, or Paolo Nicolato, who currently coaches Italy’s U21s.
